But how long do hard-boiled eggs last? Since it’s just as easy to boil a dozen as it is to boil a few, home cooks often wonder how to strike the right balance between being prepared and avoiding waste.

How Long Do Hard-Boiled Eggs Last in the Fridge?

Hard-boiled eggs have a surprisingly decent shelf life, making them great for batch cooking. According to Herve Malivert, director of culinary affairs at the Institute of Culinary Education, hard-boiled eggs last about three to four days in the refrigerator. After four or five days, he recommends discarding them.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration offers slightly more leeway, advising that hard-boiled eggs be used within one week of cooking.

One important factor is freshness: using older eggs to begin with will shorten their shelf life. A helpful tip when you bring home a fresh carton is to store the eggs upside down in the carton to help keep them fresher longer.

To Peel or Not to Peel?

There’s some debate about whether hard-boiled eggs should be stored peeled or unpeeled. Some culinary experts suggest peeling them soon after cooking, as they can become more difficult to peel over time.

However, if you plan to store them for more than a couple of days, it’s best to leave the shells on. The shells help prevent the eggs from drying out and offer a bit of extra protection in the refrigerator.
