When the news arrives, a very practical question often arises, sometimes at the last minute: what should I wear to a funeral? Without wanting to draw attention to myself, I still want to do things properly. And while I might first think of shoes or a coat, the shirt plays a much more important role than I imagine in creating a suitable outfit.
Why does attire matter at a funeral?
A funeral is first and foremost a time for reflection, presence, and support. Without being ostentatious, our appearance conveys a silent message: that of the respect we have for the deceased and their loved ones. An ill-chosen outfit may seem harmless, but it can also create unintentional discomfort.
It’s obviously not about following strict or rigid rules, but rather about adopting a certain restraint. The shirt, often the focal point of the outfit, therefore deserves particular attention to avoid any fashion faux pas.
Overly bright or flashy colors: to be absolutely avoided

This is probably the most common mistake. Brightly colored shirts—bright red, flashy pink, bright yellow, or acid green—immediately draw the eye. However, at a funeral, the idea is not to stand out, but to blend into a somber and peaceful atmosphere.
Overly bright colors or satiny fabrics can also give an inappropriate impression. Conversely, neutral and deep colors are always a safe bet: black, dark gray, navy blue, or understated beige. These shades naturally express restraint and harmonize with the solemn tone of the ceremony.
