The Connection Between Cramps and Nutrition
The link between cramps and diet lies in one of the main factors believed to trigger these involuntary contractions: electrolyte imbalance—that is, a deficiency of one or more minerals.
This situation can occur during physical activity, especially in hot weather. In these conditions, heavy sweating leads to the loss of a significant amount of electrolytes, which is considered one of the possible causes of muscle cramps. Dehydration, often caused by excessive sweating, can further worsen the problem.
A similar phenomenon may occur when taking diuretic medications. By increasing urine production, these drugs can lead to excessive mineral loss and dehydration.
For this reason, preventing cramps involves both staying properly hydrated and ensuring adequate intake of essential minerals through diet.
