Five key actions before flowering to achieve an abundant harvest in fruit trees.

Working the soil before the start of the growing season is essential for the tree’s health. Over time, the surface compacts, forming a crust that prevents air and water from reaching the tree.

By gently loosening the soil:

  • Root oxygenation is improved.
  • Rainwater penetrates better and is stored deeper.
  • Weeds that compete for water and nutrients are eliminated.
  • The fertilizers are integrated directly into the root zone.

Loose soil acts like a natural sponge, retaining moisture for the dry months. When this step is neglected, the tree expends energy surviving instead of producing large, healthy fruit.

2. Apply wood ash and nitrogen fertilizer (at different times)

Soil preparation is the ideal time to take advantage of wood ash, a very valuable natural resource.

Ash provides:

  • Potassium, important for fruit firmness
  • Calcium, which strengthens the tree’s structure
  • Improves soil pH (reduces acidity)
  • A certain repellent action against pests

It should be spread around the tree, without directly touching the trunk.

However, ash does not contain nitrogen, an essential nutrient for the initiation of vegetation and the development of leaves and flowers. Therefore, before flowering, an application of nitrogen fertilizer (such as urea or nitrate) is also recommended.

Important: Do not apply ash and nitrogen fertilizer at the same time ; doing so at separate times improves absorption.

3. Perform winter pruning correctly
