Unexpected triggers
It is often overlooked, but hives can also be caused by physical factors:
- The cold (icy air, cold water)
- Heat (hot shower, physical exertion)
- The pressure (tight clothing, bag carried on the shoulder)
- Rubbing or scratching (dermographism)
- Sun exposure
There is also a form linked to an increase in body temperature after exertion or stress.
Stress can worsen the situation. It doesn’t always trigger hives on its own, but it can amplify the reaction in susceptible individuals.
Acute or chronic urticaria: what’s the difference?
Acute urticaria is defined as hives lasting less than six weeks. This is the most common form and often has an identifiable cause.
Chronic urticaria persists beyond six weeks, sometimes without a clearly identified cause. In some cases, the immune system may play a role, which requires appropriate medical evaluation.
